Escargot

 A cliché, but the French really do enjoy snails. If you bring them a platter its contents will magically disappear within minutes, leaving behind only empty shells and satisfied grins. Having played with snails as a child, I was never too keen on the idea of eating the slippery little guys but relented once at a champagne fuelled wedding after cries of 'oh but you have to' and 'the garlic sauce c'est magnifique!'It turns out they're actually not so bad (aside from being ridiculously chewy) but unlikely to become a firm favourite. Next on the list: frogs legs!

    The best snails I have had in years were from a restaurant in Paris called hotel costes.

    Warm, balmy August evening, candle light. Opulent interiors, outdoor terraces, champagne and plate upon plate of escargot.

    Heaven!
